Steely Dan at The Strand


I was really jealous that the Yacht Rock Schooner got to play a Steely Dan tribute at The Strand in Marietta, a mere 10-15 minutes from my house, so it was really cool that I was invited to be in the horn section (playing bari sax).  Kudos to the band for doing such a good job, and particularly Jordan Shalhoup for dealing with the horn players (one of whom quit the gig during soundcheck!) and all the horn charts.  He also nailed all the sax solos.  Impressive work!


I really enjoyed being able to lay my bari in the case after the show and walk out the stage door.  I never get out that quickly!

This week, Yacht Rock is headed out of town on a cruise.  We're actually headed out to play a gig on a boat!  In anticipation of this event ( Rock Boat X ), we added a few new tunes.  The big one for me was FM by Steely Dan, which features a humongous tenor sax solo by Pete Christlieb (who also did the solo on Deacon Blues ).  Here's a look at what I wrote down.  The stuff at the end (where they band is vamping an Pete's going nuts) is a little weird because I was writing it down at 2 AM, and it wasn't easy to notate what he was playing. When we played this tune in rehearsal, I got a massive adrenaline rush.  I mean, those first four measures are familiar to everybody with ears.  The opportunity to play it for real was spine tingling.  Plus, I was sightreading it on four hours of sleep! February 2025

Just two gigs in February. This should be easy, right?  Saturday, February 8, 2025: Marietta, GA. I played a gig with some friends at a church, but it wasn't a church gig (per se), though I have played lots of church gigs here. Anyway, this was a big fundraiser party, so the music went from opera to American songbook kind of stuff to a couple of big medleys with Careless Whisper and September and Just the Two of Us . This was different kind of gig from what I've been doing, and playing with some different people was cool. I ended up writing my own charts/parts for this one even though things were well organized with charts and recordings. After the rehearsal, I added some more stuff so that I wouldn't just sit there while everybody else was playing. August 2025

 Beginning at the end of July... Thursday, July 31, 2025: Dewey Beach, MD. 11 AM flight--not too bad. TSA flagged my backpack (the two spare mouthpieces in a pouch look kind of like a disassembled pistol), but the agent tasked with looking at them told the agent next to her that she "didn't feel like looking for it" and then gave me my backpack back without a detailed search. Uhhh.... Anyway, we flew to Baltimore, and the vans picked us up and drove two and a half hours to Dewey Beach, through some pretty heavy rain a couple of times. these need another week We did the usual set up and soundcheck, and then I tried to squeeze in a run before the next line of rain came through--and failed! I got soaked.  I think this was a pretty good gig. It seemed good and raw and loose, but I was told that the room does not sound good--there are too many people trying to talk over us.
